Just a quick update on how things are progressing here at Scoláire Staire. We now have a nice logo, designed by the very talented Robbie O’Dowd, and we’re ready to start designing the first issue. A big thanks to everyone who is working on articles and other material at the minute. We are always looking for more authors, and new ideas so don’t hesitate to get in touch and be a part of this exciting new venture. The first issue is on schedule to hit the inboxes in October so spread the word to all lovers of Irish history out there.
Welcome to the blog site for Scoláire Staire Magazine. This is the first step of an exciting new initiative for postgrads and recently graduated PhD students to publish snippets of their research. However, we aim to make the magazine an entertaining read for the professional and general reader alike. We welcome articles from anyone as long as they match the high standard of Scoláire Staire. As most historians know, publishing articles is a long, drawn-out process. Scoláire Staire will change that. Like minded readers will be informed of your work in a short time period and the articles we publish can be sneak previews of the more academic, peer-reviewed articles of print journals.
Our authors will get their work out there fast. The academic community will know what you are working on and what your arguments are. This will create great potential for collaborations, debates, and discussions. We all know that conferences are great networking opportunities. Scoláire Staire will be like an online conference venue where you can reach the people you want to reach. Publishing houses are more and more often tracking down new talent on the web. Scoláire Staire has the potential to become a shop window for history presses across the globe. Our first issue will be published in October 2011. It will be just like a print magazine but completely free to download and distribute on pdf format. But this is only one aspect of what Scoláire Staire will be. Alongside the pdf format e-magazine will be a website (similar to a newspaper website like Guardian Unlimited or The Irish Times) where all our articles and features will be available, again completely free of charge. The website will also include a forum for discussion and debate and many other features like videos and podcasts.
This page is a call for articles on ANY aspect of Irish history, from ancient to contemporary. We welcome articles of between 2,000 and 3,000 words without referencing. Remember this is a magazine, not a journal, and that you are presenting snippets of your research to get people interested. We want to attract professional and general readers and ensure that as many people as possible read and appreciate your work.
We are also looking for reviews and any other features you think might fit well in Scoláire Staire. If you have an event you would like to publicise, let us know. That’s what we’re here for, to connect young Irish historians and help in any way we can.
